Prepare yourself

How to prepare yourself and your surrounding

But let me nevertheless put together a little guide for you – not a “must have” list, but an “I would recommend it” list.

What do I need to practise yoga?

I recommend a yoga mat that has a good “grip” and is slip-resistant.

Everyone has their own preferences here. You can find my favourites directly in the descriptions below the videos. It is sometimes advantageous to use additional pads, especially if the yoga mat is very thin (e.g. in the case of travel mats).

Do I also need blocks, straps, seat cushions, or pads to practise?

No, these are all supportive measures that are helpful to perform the asanas “correctly”. I always offer different versions in my videos. The options mentioned above are often helpful here. If you train regularly, I recommend investing in 1–2 blocks and a strap.

What clothes should I wear?

Something with as much freedom of movement as possible, where you don’t feel cramped.

Especially for the warm-up, or for the Savasana, I like to put on a hoodie/sweater or something warmer that I can take off quickly.

Do I need to be fit or flexible?

A basic level of fitness is certainly helpful and a certain flexibility will help you find your way around in individual positions more quickly. But yoga is the balance of flexibility and strength, and it is our task to bring these into harmony. Let’s just start.

What can I expect when I train with you – what is in store for me?

Please have a look at the different programmes at your leisure. There’s something there for every level. For a brief overview, watch the intro video of the corresponding series.

I divide the different classes into levels: “Beginner – Intermediate – Advanced”. You can also jump back and forth between levels; however, if you are new to yoga, I would recommend doing either a Beginner or Intermediate course. Skip those positions that are still too demanding and follow the rule “Listen to your body first, and only in the second step listen to me”.

Should I first watch and copy you, or just listen?

I try my best to guide you through the flow. So that you always know what we are doing and how to get to the next position. Carfully listening ist the key!

In my intermediate/advanced classes, however, I will only announce certain positions or sometimes use Sanskrit words for the asanas.

Especially when stretching and doing new movements, when it may not be obvious what to do, you are welcome to look at the screen at the same time.

Some movements hurt – should I do them anyway?

No, never.

Yoga is also the practice to get to know your body better and to train your body awareness. Being mindful of it and not forcing any movements. Acceptance is paramount – don’t force anything.

Can I take a break in between?

Of course!

During an offline hour, you would do the Child’s pose. When online, you can either press pause and continue later or do the Child’s pose for a short time and then continue again. Generally, we recommend completing a sequence.

Can I modify positions?

If it feels better in your body, yes. But be careful and attentive. And you might also adapt the actual position.

How much space do I need to practise?

Just unroll the mat, and this basically defines the space you need. Leave about one leg length free to the left and right as we will need this extra space for exercises from time to time. A wall nearby is always handy, and that’s it – ready to go!

Eating and drinking before yoga?

Ideally, do not eat 2–3 hours before practicing.

But you may always drink, preferably water or tea – we love to stay hydrated!
